An agar plate is a sterile Petri dish containing growth medium (typically higher nutrient agar) used for micro-organisms or the culture of small plants like the moss Physcomitrella patens.
Selective growth compounds may also be added to the media, such as antibiotics.
Individual microorganisms placed on the plate is developed in individual colonies, each a clone genetically identical to the individual ancestor organism (except for the low, the rate of change inevitable). Thus, the plate can be used to estimate the concentration of organisms in a liquid culture or a suitable dilution of this culture by using a colony counter, or to generate genetically pure cultures from a mixed culture of genetically different , using a technique known as "stripes. In this technique, a drop of culture at the end of a thin wire loop sterile scratched the surface of agar-agar, leaving bodies behind, a higher number at the beginning of the line and a number lower end. At one point during a successful "series, the number of organisms deposited will be separate so that individual colonies will develop in this area that can be removed for the culture of others, using another sterile loop .
Types of agar plates

An agar plate being viewed in a colony electronic counter.
Like other growth media, the formulations used in the agar plates can be classified as either defined "or" indefinite "defined medium is synthesized from chemical compounds needed by the body so that the exact molecular composition is known, while undefined medium is made from natural products such as yeast extract, where the exact composition is unknown.
Agar plates may be formulated as permissive, with the intention of enabling the growth of whatever organisms are present, or restrictive or selective, with the intention of permitting the growth of a particular subset of these organisms. This may take the form of maintenance, for instance providing a particular compound such as lactose as sole carbon source and hence the choice that only organisms that can metabolize this compound, or by a particular substance, there including antibiotics and others to select only organisms that are resistant to this substance. This corresponds to a certain degree with the media defined and undefined, undefined media, from natural products and containing an unknown combination of very many organic molecules, is generally more permissive with regard to support for greater variety of organisms, while defined media can be adapted to select organisms with specific properties.
Agar plates may also be indicator plates, in which organisms are not selected on the basis of growth, but are distinguished by a color change in some colonies, usually caused by the action of an enzyme that certain compounds added the press.
Some types commonly used agar are:
