What are other ways a measure coumadin levels in the blood may also Protime? Can a non-invasive test be performed to coagulate the blood?
Since we are talking about a blood thinner / anticoagulant, I can not imagine there would be a noninvasive means to monitor levels.
Warfarin (Coumadin) treatment is monitored by using blood samples to measure the prothrombin time (PT) and International Normalized Ratio (INR). The PT is a measure of how long it takes blood to clot. The INR is a ratio of patient's PT and a PT is considered average for a patient not on anticoagulants. The target INR may be different for each patient, by reason of warfarin (Coumadin).
Blood tests will be obtained at a fixed date. Initially, the PT / INR is usually provided, but the treatment becomes more stable over time between blood tests continues. The dose of warfarin (Coumadin) is adjusted based on INR results.
It is a measure called the International Normalized Ratio (INR, or the ratio of Protime person during the Protime control the power of the international sensitivity index), and I am not aware of any way to measure it noninvasively.
No, and prothrombin time does not measure the levels of Coumadin, but rather the effect of Coumadin on a part of the clotting cascade. The ProTime may be higher among persons taking no medication at all.
